Online poker revenue hits record highs after it more than doubled year-on-year.
Online gambling dropped slightly in the second quarter of 2020 in France's regulated markets. This was simply not the case for online poker, which saw its activity more than double year-on-year, as more and more players are getting into the game.
The Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), France's gambling regulator released figures last Monday, which reported a combined generated revenue of €323 million, among licensed online gambling operators over the three months prior to June 30. This was a 6% decline from the same time in the previous year, but, it fell a very steep 26% from the first quarter of 2020.
One of the online gambling industries that felt the COVID-19 burn the most was online sports betting, as there were no sports being played, and such, no odds to offer. Betting revenue in the second quarter was down 56% to €94 million and sports wagering turnover took a tumble to €513 million.
One of the only leagues that remained after the Pandemic began was Belarussian soccer, which was enough for punters to place bets. Due to this, overall betting turnover skyrocketed 87% to €445.4 million.
Much less popular among the French is baseball, but, since South Korean maintained its favorite sport and activity in Q2, saw a turnover of €36 million, and put baseball in the second-place in France for the first time ever.
Poker Soars
With sports depleted, online poker has blast-off in France and increased by 126% to €142 million. This was the largest gain ever for France's 10-year old market. The number of weekly players grew substantially to 1.06 million, which is 68% more poker players. Cash games and tournaments soared. Cash games rose 82% to €39 million while tournaments stunned all with 149% to €103m.
It was very obvious that poker was on the rise during the first stages of the pandemic lockdown. This happened during Q2 with a spike of 222% in the second and third weeks of April.
There are dozens of poker sites in France and the numbers of poker players continue to rise.

Online Poker In France
Online gambling revenue in France fell slightly in the second quarter of this year, due to the boom in online poker, which doubled year on year.
The French gambling regulator Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) presented its report revealing the results of online gambling by locally licensed operators.
In the second quarter of the year, the combined revenues of the operators were € 323 million, which represents a drop of 6% compared to the same period of 2019, and about 26% less than the first quarter of this year .
Like other regulated gambling markets, in France sports betting revenue was hit hard by the suspension of major sporting events due to the covid-19 pandemic since april.
Gambling revenue fell 56% to € 94 million, because betting was reduced by 57% to € 513 million. Likewise, the volume of active gamblers also decreased by more than a third to about 1.1 million.
So french bettors focused on Belarusian soccer, which remained active despite the coronavirus outbreak around the world. This made football maintain its participation of 87% (€ 445.4 million) in betting turnover, which came from registering an average of 55-60% in the previous quarters.
During the second quarter, South Korean baseball was also active, placing this sport in second place for the first time and recording a turnover of € 36 million. In contrast, basketball barely obtained half that figure and rugby union of the Australian National Rugby League, for the most part, moved to fourth place with € 9.8 million.
The rest of the sports combined barely reached 1% of the total sales of the second quarter.
Sports closings benefited poker
However, thanks to the resumption of sporting events in the last six weeks of the second quarter, the ANJ reported that the betting market had recovered during the last week of June. Turnover in that period was slightly higher than the same week in June last year.
The interruption of sports, by contrast, benefited online poker whose revenue shot up to 126% (€ 142 million). This is the highest profit made in the last ten years on the french regulated market. The number of active players each week increased 68% to 1.06 million.

Similarly, cash game revenue grew 82% (€ 39 million) and tournaments also grew 149% to € 103 million.
Compared to the first quarter when poker revenue was € 98 million, these numbers are significantly better. French licensed gambling sites did a bigger marketing effort by increasing bonus offers during the second quarter by 88% year-on-year to € 26 million.
During the second quarter, poker alone contributed 44% of all revenue in the period compared to 20% in the second quarter of last year.
When the covid-19 lockdowns began, the winnings from poker were more noticeable, as poker bets increased by 222% between april 13 and 19. As lockdowns eased, earnings began to decline. Although according to data from the ANJ, poker revenues continued to increase 50% year-on-year at the end of the second quarter.

Horse racing bets also grew 35% year-on-year to a record € 362 million in the second quarter. While the increase in income from racing reached € 88 million, a third more. These figures were not seen since the regulated market was launched in 2010.

In early may, french racing had to be suspended by the authorities, although ARJEL (now ANJ) immediately approved to keep racing betting active in various foreign markets. There, too, income gains rose to astonishing levels. During the second quarter, active race betting accounts were up just 2% year-on-year.
